Korean media said that Kia and Apple may still cooperate

According to the latest report by Reuters, citing South Korean news site Chosun Biz, Apple and Hyundai subsidiary Kia signed a memorandum of understanding last year, agreeing to cooperate in eight areas including electric vehicles. Earlier this month, after several weeks of “Apple Cars” rumors, Hyundai and Kia stated in regulatory documents that they did not discuss cooperation with Apple on the development of self-driving electric vehicles.

A few weeks before, Hyundai Motor issued a statement stating that Apple is negotiating with a number of automakers, including Hyundai Motors, to develop autonomous electric vehicles.

Reports on Thursday showed that Kia is still likely to establish a cooperative relationship, saying that the negotiations with Apple “are not completely cancelled”, but it is said that the negotiations “have encountered difficulties.” According to the report, the scope of the negotiation is “very wide” and there is room for development. Apple and Kia may eventually cooperate in the “last mile” transportation, such as Kia’s electric scooters, rather than cars.

In any case, the “Apple Car” is considered to be several years away from its release, estimated from 2024 to 2028.
